A Generation has come and gone...a torch has passed....
The Farmstead is now in its own struggle to survive. Will you help?
The New Sweden Colonial Farmstead Museum & Living History Center was “born” in 1988. It has now entered a new restoration phase, with repairs to the cabins, curation of the historic objects inside them, and programs to interpret both!
Given and lent to us in trust, these same objects reveal the secrets of how life was really lived in colonial times. They can show us how efficient early settlers were in assuring their personal and group survival--how they drew water and produced food, and cooked, served, cured and stored it, how they made their clothes and furniture, fed their children, and cared for their sick, hurt and elderly--how they slept, traveled, and protected themselves from the dangers of a sometimes hostile place.
But also how they did business, governed their communities and solved common problems--how they enjoyed themselves, too--made music, celebrated holidays, lived and loved, married and raised children, interacted with others and laid by for the future.
They can bring to life the challenges of farming and family life in the American wilderness almost four centuries ago:
We want to return these objects to the Farmstead to tell their colorful, hands-on stories--stories that even now can teach us a great deal about what a sustainable way of life really is.
And we want the cabins that house them to last for another generation.
WE NEED TO MATCH GRANT FUNDS in some cases dollar for dollar!
